Fabio Fognini could well be a contender for French Open glory if he can maintain his form and he should be able to see off Federico Delbonis comfortably in the second round today, while Caroline Garcia can reach the third round without dropping a set in the women’s draw.
Fabio Fognini 3-0 @ 41/20
Fognini has hit some real form on in recent weeks and he can secure his place in the third round of the French Open by seeing off Delbonis in straight sets today.
The Italian needed four sets to get past compatriot Andreas Seppi in the previous round but that was just the sixth set he has lost in his last 12 matches on clay.
Fognini won the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year and his only losses on this surface have come against top class opposition, having been beaten by Dominic Thiem in Madrid and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rome.
Delbonis has been in solid form with eight wins in 12 matches on clay, but Fognini should have too much quality and can come through this match-up without dropping a set.
Caroline Garcia 2-0 @ 10/17
In the women’s draw Garcia should have little problem in seeing off Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova.
Home hopeful Garcia claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Mona Barthel in her opener in Paris and seems to have rediscovered her best form after a poor start to her clay-court campaign.
Garcia won the only previous meeting between these two players 2-0, and can come through in straight sets this afternoon.
