Vibrant Ajax to shock tired Spurs

Nine months after they started their Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round with a 5-1 aggregate victory against Sturm Graz, Ajax can move closer to reaching the final in Madrid by beating Tottenham on Tuesday.

It has been an incredible run by Erik ten Hag’s team, who held Bayern Munich to two draws in the group stage before knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus in the last two rounds.

Ajax to win @ 19/10

Eredivisie leaders Ajax, who are 9/2 to win the Champions League, have won their last six domestic games, scoring 21 goals in the process, and have had the benefit of a rest as all the Dutch league matches were postponed at the weekend.

Spurs were not handed such a boost by the Premier League and Mauricio Pochettino’s team have shown signs of tiredness in the last few weeks.

A semi-final against a relatively small European team was a pipe-dream for Tottenham back in October when they had one point from their first three Champions League group matches, but they could come unstuck against this in-form Ajax outfit.

A draw at half time and Ajax victory after 90 minutes is good value at 5/1.

Dusan Tadic first goalscorer @ 6/1

The quarter-final victory against Manchester City was outstanding but Spurs’ performances against the current Premier League leaders was at odds with their recent league displays with Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to West Ham United being their sixth loss in the last 10 games.

Spurs should still finish in the top four but a lack of squad strengthening last summer and in January appears to be finally catching up with them as injuries to Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko in particular are starting to bite while Son Heung-min is suspended for Tuesday’s first leg.

Spurs, who are 4/1 to win the Champions League, may have to rely on Fernando Llorente and Lucas Moura for goals, which is not ideal.

Matthis de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Dusan Tadic have been brilliant for Ajax this season and midfield could be the area that gives the Dutch side the edge, with the latter appealing in the first goalscorer market after his European strikes against the likes of Benfica, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
