Brighton host Cardiff at the Amex on Tuesday evening knowing three points will all bar secure their top-flight status for another season, while sending Neil Warnock’s team back to the Championship.
The title race this season in the Premier League has been a terrific struggle and looks set to go to the wire, while the race for top four places is also hurtling towards an unknown finale with a month to go.
The bottom end of the table has been altogether more mundane however. As far back as the autumn it was becoming evident that Fulham and Huddersfield were facing major tasks to stay up and Cardiff have long been favourites to go down with them.
Their 21 defeats in 33 games is significantly more (four) than any of the team Cardiff have been attempting to drag towards the relegation scrap with them. They lack the quality of a Premier League team with their 28-goal tally bettering only Huddersfield’s so far.
The Bluebirds may wonder what might have unfolded had tragedy not visited them in January in that regard.
Glenn Murray to score first @ 27/4
Brighton have that X-factor in Glenn Murray. At 35-year-old he’s seemingly as good as ever and a goal on Tuesday will see Murray match his best ever Premier League tally of a dozen goals, achieved last term.
Murray was benched for Saturday’s abysmal home hammering at the hands of Bournemouth but Chris Hughton is likely to turn to the veteran here and he’ll be the focal point.
His contributions this season have been typically decisive, with Murray on target in 1-0 home wins over both West Ham and Wolves already. A repeat scoreline is priced at 4/1.
Brighton to win and under 2.5 goals @ 13/5
This isn’t likely to be a high-scoring affair. Brighton are without a goal in three games, while Cardiff have fired blanks in their last three on the road.
There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Cardiff’s last three away trip however, as they remain compact and competitive.
The Seagulls are undefeated in nine of their last 10 home matches against Cardiff in all competitions and can enhance that streak with a hard-earned win here.
