The Championship promotion battle is starting to heat up and while the battle for the play-offs is wide open, the fight for the automatic spots appears to be down to three.
Norwich lead the way with 78 points, four clear of Sheffield United in second and five ahead of Leeds United.
West Brom are 5/2 to be promoted and aren’t necessarily out of the running yet but they are seven points behind the Blades. Given the form of the top three, Albion’s best chance of Premier League football next season will probably come via the play-offs.
The top four seems locked in, aside from the order, as fifth paced Middlesbrough are nine points behind the Baggies. Just four points separate Boro from Nottingham Forest in 11th though and the fight for the final two playoff places could run until the final day.
Boro have dipped in form at the wrong time and slipped to a third successive defeat at promotion rivals Aston Villa over the weekend. The Riverside outfit are 11/2 to be promoted but may be best avoided, as despite their place in the table they have a woeful scoring record with just 40 goals so far – the worst of any side in the top 15.
In contrast, Villa have hit some real form and appeal at 13/2 to go up. The Birmingham club have won their last four in a row and seem to have resolved their defensive problems, with just two goals conceded in their last five games.
Preston North End (18/1 to be promoted), Derby County, Bristol City (both 14/1) and Forest (50/1) are all within touching distance of the top six but Sheffield Wednesday in 10th spot may be the team to watch.
The Owls are unbeaten in 10 since Steve Bruce took charge and are only two points off the play-off pace. Despite their tough run-in – with Villa, Leeds and Norwich to come in their last eight games – they offer real value for anyone seeking an outside bet.
