Portsmouth look to make it back-to-back league wins as they bid to extend their three-point lead at the top of League One. After an indifferent start Fleetwood have racked up seven points from a possible nine, including a 4-0 drubbing of Doncaster. But at fortress Fratton, Pompey should have too much for Joey Barton’s charges.
Tipped for relegation, Accrington Stanley have been the surprise package of the season so far. Top of the form table – winning four of their last five – they go up against a Peterborough side sitting pretty in second place. The league’s top scorers, home advantage could be crucial for The Posh in their quest for automatic promotion. But Accrington are more than capable of upsetting the apple cart again.
Sunderland hope to make inroads up the league as they aim to make good on their billing as title favourites. Currently fifth and four points off second, they face a Shrewsbury side looking over their shoulder at the bottom four. With just two wins all season, it could be same old at New Meadow.
Another topish v bottomish tussle sees Doncaster at home to Gillingham. Hoping to make it three wins in three, an emphatic victory could bring Donny delight and a leapfrogging up the table to second spot. Gillingham’s surprise 2-0 triumph away at Portsmouth feels a long time ago after consecutive defeats in league and cup. But knowing they’ve got their sort of performance in them could lead to an eye-catching clash in South Yorkshire.
Further down the table, Bristol Rovers host Oxford in a crucial relegation scrap. A loss for either team could see them start to be cut adrift. With no wins or goals in four games, the signs look ominous for Rovers. Boss Darrell Clarke has called for calm, admitting “it’s not always going to be a bed of roses”. But with Oxford coming off a confidence-boosting win against relegation rivals Plymouth, it could be a thorny issue for The Gas.
