Cardiff City’s winless start to the season looks set to be extended to seven games after Sunday’s encounter as Burnley can edge to a narrow win in South Wales.
It promises to be a tight and low-scoring affair as the Bluebirds have only scored three goals in their first six Premier League matches of the campaign while Sean Dyche’s side only had three of their own before last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing of Bournemouth at Turf Moor.
That result came as a surprise to many people but there were signs against the Cherries that Burnley were getting back to last season’s performance levels following their travails in the opening five matches when they seemed to have forgotten how to defend.
Neil Warnock’s side have undoubtedly been handed a tough set of fixtures in the first two months of the campaign and have already lost to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City this month, conceding 12 goals in the process.
Warnock will have identified Sunday’s encounter as one the Bluebirds need to win though, but they appear to be playing the visitors from East Lancashire at exactly the wrong time.
The Clarets will be keen to build on last weekend’s first Premier League triumph of the campaign and are more than capable of emerging triumphant in Cardiff. They are 13/2 to clinch a 1-0 victory.
Seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams have ended in draws but Burnley, who have not won on any of their last 11 visits to Cardiff, can return to the north-west on Sunday evening with three precious points.
Aaron Lennon was outstanding for Dyche’s team against Bournemouth and the former Tottenham star can continue his recent renaissance by grabbing the first goal at superb odds of 18/1.
