Diego Schwartzman comes up against Simone Bolelli on the clay courts of Bastad in Sweden this afternoon and the Argentine top seed should be able to secure the win comfortably.
Schwartzman will make his first competitive appearance on clay since his memorable French Open campaign, where he reached the quarter-finals but then came up against Rafael Nadal.
The world number 12 went down 3-1 to the ‘King of Clay’ in Paris and was the only player to take a set against Nadal during the French Open.
Italian Bolelli has already played three matches in Sweden and has only dropped one set, but Schwartzman is a huge step up in class and the 25-year-old should be able to claim the victory 2-0 with relative ease.
Macedonia’s Sheriff Tiraspol have some work to do against Torpedo Kutaisi in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier after losing the reverse fixture 2-1 in Georgia.
Tiraspol enjoyed more chances in their away leg but slipped to defeat after taking an early lead. There is a danger the home side could sit back if they take an early lead and attempt to defend a clean sheet rather than risk allowing Kutaisi to grab an away goal.
However, the first leg was an open affair and we may see the same again. Kutaisi will know just how crucial an away goal of their own could be so I’m expecting them to commit men forward, but the hosts have enough quality to win in a match where both teams can score.
