Wimbledon may have come to an end but there are still a few grass-court events to come before the hard-court swing returns and there is an intriguing clash at the ATP Newport event today as Donald Young comes up against Vasek Pospisil.
Pospisil to win 2-0 @ 8/5
Canada’s Pospisil has managed just one win on grass in four attempts so far this year but he did at least manage to win a set in all three of his defeats.
Young heads to Newport, Rhode Island, with a similar record as he has also picked up just one win on grass in four attempts. The American is currently ranked outside the world’s top 200 and failed to qualify for Wimbledon, with Pospisil taking on a much higher standard of opposition in recent weeks.
The two players are level at 1-1 in their ATP head-to-head record and Pospisil can take the lead with a straight sets victory this afternoon.
Denis Kudla to beat Ruben Bemelmans 2-0 @ 6/5
Both Kudla and Bemelmans have arguably exceeded expectations on grass this season. American Kudla reached the semi-finals at Halle, losing in a close match to Roger Federer, but went out to Lucas Pouille in the first round at Wimbledon.
Bemelmans came through Wimbledon qualifying and then managed to reach the second round, where he lost in five sets to John Isner.
Kudla has played more games on grass however, and has a record of nine wins and four defeats. The 25-year-old will be looking to finish strongly on the surface and his performance against Federer in Halle suggests he can see off Bemelmans without dropping a set in Newport today.
