England can enjoy shoot-out redemption

It promises to be a tight and keenly-contested affair but England can beat Colombia in Moscow, even if Gareth Southgate’s team need penalties to reach the quarter-finals.

With the way the draw has opened up both sides will fancy their chances of reaching the World Cup final but England may have the edge, particularly if James Rodriguez is unable to play.

England 9/1 to win after penalties

Having been the victim of so many penalty shoot-out defeats in the past this could be the chance for England to at least partially redress the balance.

If Harry Kane’s penalty prowess in the 6-1 drubbing of Panama is anything to go by, the current England players could help to erase the memories of Chris Waddle, Stuart Pearce, Gareth Batty, Darius Vassell and, of course, Southgate himself.

Both teams have had their moments in Russia, with England particularly dynamic against an admittedly dire Panama side, while Colombia hit the heights in the 3-0 demolition of Poland while being less impressive against Japan and Senegal.

England 5/1 to win the World Cup

Colombia have never beaten England and lost 2-0 to the Three Lions at the 1998 World Cup but in Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado, ironically two players who failed to make an impression during their spells in the Premier League, they have potential match-winners.

Both players were spellbinding against the limited Poles but struggled to impose themselves in the other Group H matches.

Sterling 11/2 to score the first goal

In Raheem Sterling, England also have a player who has the ability to be a big hit in the tournament but he appears to be suffering from a lack of confidence.

Maybe the Manchester City will finally transfer his club form to the international stage in Moscow on Tuesday.

The England players should be fresh as most of them will not have seen any match action for nine days after Southgate rested the majority of his first-choice stars for the 1-0 loss to Belgium B.

It will be interesting to see if that policy proves to be the correct one.
