Iceland face Croatia in World Cup Group D this evening and have an excellent chance to secure a win – and potentially a place in the next round – against a side who are already through to the knockout stages.
Croatia produced one of the displays of the tournament in their last game to down Argentina 3-0 in a result that guarantees their spot in the last 16. As such coach Zlatko Dalic has the opportunity to rest a few players and Ivan Rakitic, Ante Rabic, Sime Vrsaljko, Mario Mandzukic, Marcelo Brozovic and Vedran Corluka seem set to miss out as they are all one booking away from a ban.
I’d also be surprised if Luka Modric starts when Dalic has no need to risk him, and it could be a similar case for Ivan Perisic too.
The Strakarnir Okkar finished ahead of their European rivals in qualifying and I wouldn’t necessarily rule them out even if Croatia were at full strength, so against a weakened team you have to fancy their chances and at a big price they look great value today.
Iceland performed well against Argentina and in the early stages against Nigeria looked the better team but the hot conditions in Volgograd definitely worked against them. It will be hot in Rostov today but not quite as oppressive as it was in their last fixture and with Croatia already through this is a great chance for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s men to register a first-ever World Cup win for Iceland.
Denmark face France in Group C and both sides look likely to progress. France have been unconvincing in their wins over Australia and Peru but the Danes haven’t particularly impressed either so calling a winner in this match-up looks tough.
Spurs midfielder Eriksen has been in-form however, and he can back up his strike against the Socceroos by slotting one past club-mate Hugo Lloris in the opposing goal this afternoon.
