Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sharapova meet in a fascinating French Open quarter-final today and I’m expecting a win for the Spanish third seed.
Both players benefitted from walkovers in the previous round as Sharapova avoided a showdown with old nemesis Serena Williams, while Muguruza won the first two games against Lesia Tsurenko before the Ukrainian retired.
Muguruza, the 2016 champion in Paris, is yet to drop a set in the French capital and has only been taken to a tie break once.
Sharapova did make a statement with a thrashing of former world number one Karolina Pliskova earlier in the tournament but Muguruza is another step up in quality.
The Russian has been in good form on clay but when faced with the very top level of opposition – such as Simona Halep and Caroline Garcia – she has fallen short.
Sharapova is still working her way back to top form after a long spell away from the game and Muguruza comes into this one at the top of her form, so I expect her to get the job done in straight sets this afternoon.
Cleveland trail the NBA Finals series 2-0 to Golden State Warriors and desperately need a win in their first home game of the series to keep their Championship hopes alive.
The Cavs managed to force overtime in Game 1 before being well beaten in Game 2, and with home advantage I’m expecting a close game tonight (2.00am start Thursday BST).
Cleveland are 6/4 to win but I’m going to play it a little safer and take the Cavs with a +4.5 handicap. The Cavs have lost just once at home in the post-season and know they simply cannot afford to lose tonight if they are to maintain their title hopes, so I’m expecting a close contest even if they do ultimately fall short.
