Christina McHale impressed with a 2-1 victory over 19th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round of the US Open and she can continue her bid with a win over Russia’s Daria Kasatkina today.
The American has reached the third round in all four Grand Slams but never been beyond that point in any. McHale has reached the third round of her home major twice and can match that result again this year.
Both McHale and Kasatkina endured mixed build-ups to the final Grand Slam of the year but home advantage could swing this in the 25-year-old’s favour, and she looked on top form against Pavlyuchenkova after losing the first set.
Kasatkina, 20, is one of the rising stars on the WTA Tour but clay is her favoured surface, having won the junior French Open back in 2014, and McHale’s greater experience could prove the difference today.
In the men’s draw there is an interesting battle between two Spaniards in Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez to come this evening. Lopez has struggled since his return from injury but Verdasco has also been out of sorts on hard courts this season with just one win prior to the US Open.
