The second round of the US Open gets underway today and my top bet comes from the WTA draw where Petra Kvitova faces Alize Cornet.
Cornet managed to overcome Heather Watson in her opener in straight sets, surviving a fightback from the British hopeful in the second when Watson broke her serve twice.
Kvitova dropped a few service games herself in her 2-0 win over Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and has been in mixed form since the hard court season began, winning half of her eight matches.
However, the Czech has arguably faced a higher standard of opposition since Wimbledon ended while only one of Cornet’s hard court wins on the US swing has come against a player ranked inside the world’s top 50.
Kvitova is still trying to rediscover top form after career-saving hand surgery, but as she was won both previous meetings with Cornet and appears to be on the rise, the best bet in this clash looks to be a 2-0 win for the two-time Grand Slam champion at 1/1.
In the men’s second round, Britain’s Kyle Edmund can overcome American hopeful Steve Johnson at 5/6.
There isn’t a great deal to separate the two in terms of quality, however Edmund is the man in form and won their most recent meeting at Winston-Salem just six days ago, and he can claim another victory over Johnson.
In a bonus of sorts, the rain over New York City saw the majority of matches delayed and both of my tips from the first round yesterday are still live – you can view them here.
