Harry Kane will be bidding to claim a third-successive Premier League golden boot in the 2017-18 season, but who are the other likely contenders to be the top goalscorer next season?
Kane is unsurprisingly the 13/5 favourite to be top of the goal charts again come next May after two outstanding seasons for Spurs. The England man followed up his 25 goals in the 2015-16 campaign with 29 last term and it would be a fantastic personal achievement if he was able to go and make it three out of three.
There is no doubt Kane is one of the best natural finishers around and his ability to score different types of goals allied with a decent injury record means he’s sure to be in the mix once again.
Assessing other candidates at this stage of the summer is tricky with over two months left of the transfer window and there are bound to be new arrivals to the Premier League that will hope to be battling for the golden boot.
But, judging the market on what is currently on offer, there are several names that stand out – starting with Romelu Lukaku.
The Everton ace hit 25 goals last season as he developed further but he’s widely expected to move on this summer with either a return to Chelsea or a switch to Manchester United likely.
If he does leave Goodison Park, expect him to be up there in the goal charts again even though there is an element of doubt over whether he will immediately shine at a bigger club, where the expectation on him will be even greater.
Pep Guardiola seemed to favour the young Brazilian over the Argentine when both were available to him last season and Jesus has already struck seven goals in just 10 appearances to underline his predatory instincts.
Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez is 10/1 and will get goals if he stays, but it’s a big if with a move to the Etihad looking on the cards as things stand for the Chile international.
Marcus Rashford is an interesting prospect at 20/1 as he continues to improve at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.
If he steps up and becomes the Red Devils’ first-choice frontman in the new season then it would not be beyond the realms of possibility to see the England international fire 25 goals or more and be a top-goalscorer contender.
Other outside candidates to consider include Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (28/1), who will be determined to build on an impressive first season at Anfield when he notched 13 Premier League goals, while Christian Benteke, at 40/1, could represent great value if he again gets the service he needs at Crystal Palace.
Finally, Eden Hazard is on offer at what looks like a generous 33/1 but much depends on if he stays at Chelsea, amid ongoing rumours he will leave the champions and join Real Madrid this summer, while Diego Costa’s odds of 9/1 look too short with all the speculation over his future as well.
