Roger Federer is bidding for a ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle but he may come unstuck against Alex Zverev in Germany today.
Federer, the 5/2 favourite to secure the Wimbledon title next month, overcame Russian youngster Karen Khachanov 2-0 in his semi-final match on Saturday but he lost a service game in both sets. If Zverev can break the 18-time Grand Slam champion’s serve you’d back him to go on and win the set so Federer will have to up his game in the final, as he hasn’t quite managed to replicate the form that saw him grab the Australian Open crown earlier this year since his return from an 11-week break.
The Swiss star is yet to drop a set at Halle but he hasn’t looked at the very top of his game during the tournament, and a loss to veteran Tommy Haas in Stuttgart earlier this month show there are some cracks in his admittedly formidable armour.
Zverev is one of the rising stars in men’s tennis and he should have strong support from the crowd in his homeland. The German beat Federer in the semi-finals of this event last year and in the Hopman Cup earlier this year, meaning he leads their head-to-head 2-1 (1-1 on the ATP Tour).
This looks to be a very competitive final and as the value is with Zverev my top bet for today is a win for the fourth seed, which is priced at 39/20.
Six of my seven tennis bets have come in this week, with Feliciano Lopez’s win over Grigor Dimitrov yesterday the latest success – and the 2-1 win at 3/1 also landed. This could be a day of upsets as the Spaniard takes on Marin Cilic in the Queen’s Clup final and Lopez to win at 39/20 also appeals in London.
Cilic has looked incredibly strong however, so if may take Lopez three sets again to seal the win and a 2-1 success for the underdog is available at 9/2.
