Grigor Dimitrov takes on Tommy Robredo in the French Open today and the Bulgarian star should be able to claim a win but it may not be an easy passage through to the next round for the world number 13.
Robredo, 35, leads the head-to-head 3-1 and has won both of their previous meetings on clay. The former world number five is definitely in the twilight of his career and is now way outside the top 200 in the rankings but he can still give Dimitrov a test today.
The Spaniard, who is playing in the tournament with a protected ranking, overcame Britain’s Dan Evans 3-1 in his first round and should be able to take a set off Dimitrov today even if a victory is beyond him.
Robredo with a +6.5 game handicap at 20/21 looks a solid call but my top bet for this match-up is a 3-1 Dimitrov win at 11/4 in the set betting market. The 11th seed may be a genuine Grand Slam contender but the French Open on clay is probably not a tournament he’ll ever win.
Dimitrov has fallen in the first round in four of his six appearances at the Paris major, so Robredo should be able to make a dent in his armour today.
Elsewhere, the football season may have ended for the majority of Europe but there is the small matter of the Croatian Cup today as Dinamo Zagreb take on league champions Rijeka. Zagreb look good value at 1/1 to claim the win in 90 minutes as they look to respond to missing out on the league crown. Rijeka enjoyed a fantastic season but their success was built on incredible home form – winning 17 of 18 home league games – and as the final is at a neutral venue a Dinamo Zagreb win looks like the way to go today.
