Wolfsburg suffered heartache as they conceded late on against Hamburg to drop into the bottom three, but they can preserve their top-flight status when they take on Eintracht Braunschweig in the relegation play-off.
Wolfsburg host the first leg on Thursday and are 10/19 to come out on top. It should be a hard-fought affair as the two sides are local rivals, with just 35km separating them, but Die Wolfe can take heart from the fact in six of the last seven relegation play-offs the Bundesliga club has come out on top.
The hosts have lost five of their last eight games going into the fixture and it remains to be seen how they will respond to their final-day disappointment.
However, their home form remains fairly strong, with just four defeats in their last 12, and normally their 37 Bundesliga points would have been enough for automatic survival, with their season’s total the highest since the relegation play-off was reintroduced.
Braunschweig have failed to score in three of their last five away games so the 23/20 on a home win to zero is my top bet for this clash.
The visitors have a strong home record so they may well put the focus on defence in the first leg, with home advantage to come in the second, and a 1-0 win for Wolfsburg at 5/1 also appeals in the Bundesliga relegation play-off.
