There isn’t much to go on today so the focus is on tomorrow’s Europa League final as Manchester United face off against Ajax in Stockholm.
United boss Jose Mourinho has had his side’s focus on their European date for some time now and fielded a weakened team in the final round of fixtures against Crystal Palace, having rotated his squad in their previous games as well.
Meanwhile, Ajax were involved in an unsuccessful push for the Dutch title that ran until the final round of fixtures, albeit finishing a week earlier, and the Premier League outfit may well be fresher on Wednesday, despite a lengthy injury list.
Mourinho has an incredible record in finals with 11 wins in 13 attempts and that extra experience could prove the difference against a young Ajax side.
The Dutch giants have picked up some impressive results in their European campaign, having seen off Schalke and Lyon – despite being beaten 3-1 in France by the latter – but they may well come unstuck against United.
Ajax’s games have been characterised by lots of goals while United’s have been low-scoring affairs. None of the Old Trafford side’s European fixtures have yielded over two goals since the first knockout round against St Etienne, aside from an extra time success over Anderlecht, and it looks more likely they will be the team dictating the play so I’m not expecting a goal fest in Sweden.
United are 5/6 to win the match or 6/4 to win to zero, both of which appeal but the 5/1 on a 1-0 win for Mourinho’s men is my top bet for the Europa League final. The United boss has made his side hard to beat this season but they’ve not been prolific in front of goal so this match could come down to fine margins.
