Conte’s men to take another title step

Chelsea will expect to edge closer to the Premier League title on Sunday, but they will not have an easy ride at Goodison Park against Everton.

Antonio Conte’s side are four points clear of Tottenham going into this weekend’s games and, with the finish line now coming into sight, they know they can ill-afford to slip up on Merseyside.

Chelsea appear to have put the disappointing defeat at Manchester United earlier this month behind them now after victories over Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final and then the 4-2 success at home against Southampton on Tuesday.

Despite Tottenham doing their best to keep the title race alive, it would still take a dramatic late collapse from Conte’s men for their London rivals to be celebrating – and not them – come May 21.

Sunday’s game, though, is a significant hurdle for Chelsea to overcome in their quest to finish top of the pile because Ronald Koeman’s side, on their own patch, can cause anyone problems.

The leaders were asked questions at times in the first half against Saints after being pegged back to 1-1 but they found all the answers as goals from Gary Cahill and a welcome brace from Diego Costa eventually ensured a comfortable win. They are likely to be tested again on Sunday with Everton keen to show they can mix it with the best but expect Chelsea to have too much for their opponents.

The match odds reflect the need for another Chelsea win as the visitors are favourites and on offer at 21/20, compared to Everton’s 53/20 to win while the draw is 23/20. Everton’s impressive home form – they have won their last eight in the league at Goodison – will tempt some to side with Koeman’s men but, with what’s at stake, Chelsea should come out on top.

There have been plenty of goals in both side’s recent games so over 3.5 at 39/20 also appeals, while Romelu Lukaku to score anytime at 6/5 – against his old club and one that is chasing his signature again this summer – seems a very wise bet. The Everton ace is top of the Premier League scoring chart with 24 and has hit 12 in his last 11 outings.
