An all-Bundesliga clash between Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke is probably the standout fixture in this evening’s Europa League and I’m backing Gladbach to progress.
The first leg at the Veltins-Arena ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving this tie finely poised, but home advantage should see Gladbach through this evening.
Schalke have managed just two wins in their last nine away games, with five defeats, and those victories came at second tier Sandhausen in the DFB Pokal and PAOK in the Europa League.
The Royal Blues haven’t beaten top flight German opposition on the road since November and a resurgent Gladbach side should prove too strong this evening.
The hosts saw a five-match unbeaten run ended at in-form Hamburg over the weekend and they have only picked up two victories in their last five matches on home soil but one of those wins was a 4-2 Bundesliga success over Schalke.
Schalke have only failed to score once in their previous five outings, at Bayern Munich, and Gladbach have found clean sheets hard to come by with just one shut-out in their last seven games in all competitions.
