Championship Preview – Owls to avoid the Blues

This weekend sees another round of exciting Championship action and there are a number of intriguing games concerning teams at both ends of the table.

Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham kick off proceedings when they meet at Hillsborough on Friday. The Owls remain sixth in the table and at 4/5 to win should have enough to take the points.

The Blues have had a torrid time of it in recent months but finally got their first win under Gianfranco Zola last time out against Fulham.

Their play-off hopes remain in doubt and although 7/2 is a good price, they may well struggle to repeat the victory they sealed over Wednesday earlier in the season.

Three o’clock sees a host of interesting games. Arguably the tastiest of all the mid-afternoon games sees Leeds host Cardiff. These clubs have plenty of history, both on and off the field, and there are sure to be plenty of fireworks.

The Whites may well be sitting pretty in the play-offs but they have lost two of their last four. However, having won their last six at Elland Road, 21/20 for them to extend that run looks an excellent price.

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock always loves to get one over on his former clubs and will set his side out to frustrate the West Yorkshire outfit. Cardiff are 14/5 to take the victory but it could prove to be a frustrating afternoon for Warnock’s team despite recent improvements.

A crucial clash at the foot of the table is also due to take place as bottom club Rotherham host 22nd-placed Blackburn. The Millers are well adrift and another defeat could realistically spell the end.

They are 39/20 for the win while Rovers’ 7/5 makes them hugely tempting and they will be desperate for the points to keep pace with those above them.

The final game on Saturday sees Wolves host Newcastle. Paul Lambert’s men have shown signs of improvement since he took over but suffered a disappointing defeat to Burton last weekend.

A home win on Saturday is a tempting 53/20 but the Magpies seem to have rediscovered their form in recent weeks and start the weekend top of the table.

Rafael Benitez’s side will also be keen to avenge the defeat they suffered to Wolves earlier in the season. An away triumph looks a good price at 11/10 while the draw is 23/10.
