Scottish Premiership Preview – Jambos in good spirits for Tynecastle test

One full book of fixtures remains in the Scottish Premiership before the door slams on 2016 and there are a couple of tasty clashes to look forward to.

Rangers welcome Celtic to Ibrox for the first time in almost six years on Saturday morning for the traditional Hogmanay fixture, but before that Hearts and Aberdeen go head-to-head in Edinburgh.

The Dons are in third place ahead of this meeting, three points clear of Hearts with a game in hand.

Ian Cathro will know defeat is not an option if his side are going to maintain their push for European football next season. The new Jambos boss got his first win last time out in a thumping four-goal demolition of Kilmarnock.

Aberdeen meanwhile have enjoyed wins either side of Christmas Day against Motherwell and Hamilton Accies.

Cathro is starting to make his mark on Hearts after give games in charge. His new system allows the full-backs to really make their presence felt going forward and they can cause Aberdeen problems.

If Hearts can channel the sort of atmosphere and intensity that inspired them to a deserved 2-0 win over Rangers a month ago, they can make more hay with a three-point haul priced at 33/20 with ComeOn!

On to Saturday and Ibrox is the only place to be as Rangers and Celtic meet for a third time this season. Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers has been eager to move some pressure on to the home side, insisting Rangers need to deliver when they host Celtic for the first time since January 2011.

Then, it finished 2-0 to the Hoops and a similar result now would not surprise and can be backed at 15/2 with ComeOn!

Given the form of both sides and the gulf in quality that clearly exists, backing Celtic at 20/27 to win a third Glasgow derby in four months looks the obvious choice here.

Partick Thistle have relished the festive football programme as much as any side in Scotland. Bottom of the table a week ago, two wins on the spin see them up to sixth now.

They fully merited a 2-0 win against Dundee last time out and, at 4/5 with ComeOn!, can earn a third victory against a Kilmarnock side that has lost three times in five games with just one goal scored in almost 400 minutes of football.

Hamilton Accies last four games have pitted them against Celtic (twice), Rangers and Aberdeen. They’ve not been outclassed in any of those four, but have failed to get a point for their efforts.

They can arrest that slide when Motherwell come to New Douglas Park. Mark McGhee’s team got a win at basement club Inverness in midweek but they rarely follow up and the draw looks a value call here at 9/4.
