Belgium take on Sweden later today in what is a must-win clash for both countries.
Technically, the Belgians could lose and qualify providing the margin of defeat is just one goal but Marc Wilmots’ men will surely go all out for the win as that would put them in what now looks like the much more favourable top half of the draw.
Belgium were among the pre-tournament favourites but they had no answer to the tactical nous of the Italians in their opener. However, they put themselves back on target to qualify after cruising to victory over a Republic of Ireland side that nearly got the better of Sweden.
A win is the only result that will do for the Swedes but they have relied too heavily on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and with just one goal in two games so far – an Ireland own goal – it is hard to make a case for anything other than a Belgian victory, potentially a fairly comfortable one.
If Belgium do get an early goal Sweden will have to come forward and the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard can profit in such a scenario.
