League One Play Off Final: Barnsley v Millwall betting preview

This weekend is a bumper weekend for football with all three tiers of the Football League contesting their respective play off finals.

After already previewing Saturday’s Championship final between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday, we look ahead to Sunday’s League one play off final between Barnsley and Millwall.

With both sides unaccustomed to life in England’s third tier (Barnsley have been there for just two seasons whilst Millwall were relegated from the Championship last season), either team will be desperate to make their way back to where they feel they belong.

Today we preview all the action and find out where the betting value lies.

Millwall – the story so far

The Lions edged past Bradford City in their recent play-off semi final tie after a robust 3-1 victory away at Valley Parade ultimately proved to be the difference. Much like their opponents the Tykes, Neil Harris’ men just missed the cut for the automatic promotion places having fallen four points short of second placed Burton Albion. After a dreadful run of form that saw them win-less in their final nine domestic games, Millwall suffered relegation from the Championship last season.

Barnsley – the story so far

The ease in which Barnsley disposed of play-off semi-final opponents Walsall came as quite a shock considering how strong the West Midlands outfit looked going into this month’s tie. After a 5-0 demolition of Port Vale in the final game of the League One campaign, Walsall narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to the Championship but were expected by many to at least make the final of this year’s play-offs. In their two-legged tie with Barnsley however, the Saddlers were thwarted 6-1 over two legs thanks to the deadly goal scoring exploits of Barnsley forward Sam Winnall.

Team News

Barnsley: Tykes boss Paul Heckingbottom confirmed on the Barnsley FC club website this week that all of his players were ‘fit and training.’

Millwall: Important Lions defender Byron Webster faces a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s clash after going off injured in his side’s play-off semi-final tie against Bradford this month. Right back Marlon Romeo will be absent this weekend after his sending off in Millwall’s final game of the season against Gillingham means he is suspended.

Where does the betting value lie?

Goals, goals and more goals is what we envisage we’ll be seeing at Wembley on Sunday afternoon. With Tykes front man Winnall in deadly form right now (he’s netted 23 goals in League One this season) as well as Millwall’s Lee Gregory and Steve Morison partnership that’s certainly proven to be a handful this season, we reckon at almost even money, backing both teams to score could be a good way to go this weekend.

For the full time result between these two sides itself, we’re struggling to lay down a marker with both Millwall and Barnsley so evenly matched on paper. At 43/20, a draw inside 90 minutes is our prediction.

Betting Tip: Both teams to score – 10/11

Betting Tip: Draw – 43/20
